Getting a Consulting Job in a Firm: pros and cons
For many that are just starting out as a business consultant, they more times than not simply go to work for a firm. Instead of taking the road less traveled and starting their own business. However, before person simply slips into the routine of working for someone else, they need to know the pros and cons of making this decision in order to make sure that it is one that is right for them. So what are the drawbacks of doing this?
One of the most common drawbacks that people are going to point out is that the person may find themselves going up against deadlines that seem impossible to meet. Why is this? Simply because they are working for someone else who has made a promise to the client that the work will get done in a certain amount of time that is usually too short for anyone that actually does this kind of work. However, the employee cannot say anything or they will simply lose the job. Thus, the person may find that they are working on weekends, having to cancel family plans and so forth to meet the deadline that their boss gave to a client. On the flipside, if the person were to work for themselves, they would find that they could give a deadline that was more appropriate for the work that was being done and make sure that they give themselves plenty of time to fix the problem.
Another drawback of working for someone else is that you are going to be answering to the owner of the company as well as the project manager for what you are working on. Thus, if there is a problem, you are going to have two people breathing down your neck and yelling at you for your performance. If you work for yourself, then the only person that you are disappointing is yourself, yet again you are having to take all the blame for this. When you work for someone, they more times than not stand behind their employees and make it to where the product is still delivered to the client, even though they may be very upset with the consultant for a really long time.
Another major drawback of working for a firm is that you are placing your success in their hands. What if they do not like you for whatever reason? Then, you are going to find that you are not getting the big cases that are where the money is at and gaining a reputation. Instead, you are somewhat stuck in a rut. So what are the benefits of working for a company?
First off, you do have that job security that you would otherwise not have, which is always a good feeling. Secondly, you can make a good name for yourself with working for a reputable company and can always branch off to work for yourself later down the line. The person seriously needs to weigh the pros and cons of any decision that they make in order to make sure that they are making the one that is going to be right for them.
