CLARKSON EVANS LTD: WINNER 2001
Having established a winning formula based on guaranteed
standards of skill, reliability and effective project management,
Clarkson Evans - an electrical contracting company - embarked
upon a policy of sustained growth and expansion.
Because of difficulties in finding skilled technicians the
company decided to recruit and train its own apprentices using
the Modern Apprenticeship system. Initially, off-the-job training
and NVQ assessment were provided by a local college. However,
over time it seemed that the college experience was not
sufficiently relevant to the company's standards or way of
working.
As a result, the company decided to set up its own fully-staffed
and equipped training centre. This proved very successful.
Training effectiveness improved significantly and completion
rates rose. Financial savings meant that within five years the
start-up costs had been covered. The centre then became
profitable by providing training services to other employers.
Meanwhile, the skilled technicians produced by the centre have
enabled the company to exceed its business objectives.
